GET IT OUT THERE!
What is good? What is ‘quality’?
Persig (‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’) concluded that “quality is an event where subject becomes aware of object”. Research, and my experience as a teacher, show that creativity and quality work arise from intrinsic motivation: the innate desire to do something for its own sake rather than any reward that one might receive.
For this reason I decided, while still young, that I would pursue my own work because of this inner necessity and not try to market or sell what I did in order to avoid outside influence. As Rilke put it (“Letters to a Young Poet”): “Dig into yourself for a deep answer. And if this answer rings out in assent, if you meet this solemn question with a strong, simple “I must,” then build your life in accordance with this necessity”.
Now, at sixty, I have a lifetime’s work of expression: writing and poetry, drawing, painting, photography, digital creation and motion design and I would like to share my work: ‘to get it out there” and to see if my work can touch others and make a difference.
My motivation is not financial yet, if I could get some financial return to free myself to devote the rest of my life entirely to my own work, it would be great!
If you like my work and could help to get it known, I should be very grateful for any support and assistance.
